What is Depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It is a recognised mental health condition that affects how you think, feel, and function in daily life. It can impact your energy, relationships, and even your ability to connect with God. Often marked by persistent sadness, a loss of interest in life, or deep fatigue, depression is not a moral failure or a lack of faith—it is a real struggle that many faithful people experience.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

When Darkness Feels Overwhelming

Depression can make even the smallest tasks feel impossible. You may be battling persistent sadness, hopelessness, or a deep inner heaviness that doesn’t lift—no matter how much you pray, rest, or try to “snap out of it.” As a Christian, this struggle can feel even more isolating, especially when faith doesn’t seem to bring the relief you long for. But you are not alone—and healing is possible.

At times, even the strongest believers wrestle with despair. The Bible is filled with examples—David, Elijah, Jeremiah, and others cried out from deep sorrow. Depression is not a sign of weak faith, but a human experience in a fallen world. And by God’s grace, it can be understood, treated, and redeemed.

What Depression Might Look Like

If you’re experiencing some of the following, Christian counselling could help:

  • A persistent low mood or deep sadness

  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or shame

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Withdrawal from relationships

  • Thoughts of death, dying, or suicide

These symptoms are real, valid, and deserve attention. Depression is not something you simply “pray away”—it is something we walk through together, in faith and compassion.

The Impact of Depression In Your Life

Depression doesn’t just affect your mood—it touches every part of life. You may find it difficult to enjoy your family, keep up with work, maintain friendships, or engage in your spiritual walk. Daily routines can feel overwhelming. Prayer might seem dry or distant. You may feel guilt for withdrawing from church or struggling to believe God still has a purpose for you. These effects are real, and they are deeply painful—but they are not the end of your story. With support and grace, healing is within reach.

A Christ-Centred Approach to Healing

In Christian counselling, we honour both truth and grace. We explore your emotional world with honesty, recognising the ways depression has shaped your thoughts, relationships, and sense of identity. At the same time, we gently restore biblical hope—grounded in God’s promises.

You’ll learn to:

  • Recognise and challenge negative thought patterns

  • Practice emotional self-care rooted in biblical truth

  • Reconnect with spiritual disciplines in a life-giving way

  • Embrace God’s love and grace—even when you feel undeserving

  • Develop practical tools to manage your symptoms

  • Move from shame to purpose

Each session is personalised. Whether you want to explore depression from a theological angle, work through past wounds, or simply find light in the darkness—you’ll be met with empathy, faith, and psychological skill.
